Claims - Frequently Asked Questions

As an employer, am I responsible for reporting every injury as a workers' compensation claim?
Each injury that results in an employee missing time from work and/or that requires medical attention should be reported to us on the "First Report of Injury or Illness" form.

In order to help manage your costs, you should make a report within 24 hours of the incident. Find out how prompt reporting can save you money.

What kind of records should I keep? Your personnel files should document:

  • When the employee first complained of a condition;
  • When, where and how the injury occurred;
  • What the employee was doing and why, and
  • Which part of the body was affected.

NOTE: Many states require early investigation, documentation and reporting of each injury. Even if you are unsure whether or not an employee's, injury or illness is work-related, document the details for future reference.

What are SICs?
Standard Industry Codes, or SICs, are universal codes that help identify industries by type. SICs are sometimes required to complete a "First Report of Injury or Illness" form. To find out what your SIC code is, go to www.osha.gov/cgi-bin/sic/sicser5 or call us at 1.800.825.9489.
